Most software today is written to automate some real-world process, whether it be writing a letter, purchasing the new album from your favorite band, or placing an order to sell some stock. In object-oriented programming (OOP), these are objects and their interactions are methods.

Many of these books put the specs in a language the rest of us could understand. However, as J2EE became more mature, and more developers understood the details and practiced applying them, J2EE design books began to emerge. These books didn’t teach you about the technology per se, but focused more on how to design with the technology. This was the case with Core J2EE Patterns. We focused heavily on best practices in the form of Patterns.
