Practical API Design: Confessions of a Java Framework Architect

Publisher: Apress Publication: 2008, English ISBN: 9781430209737 Pages: 416 You might think more than enough design books exist in the programming world already. In fact, there are so many that it makes sense to ask why you would read yet another. Is there really a need for yet another design book? In fact, there is a greater need than ever before, and Practical API Design: Confessions of a Java Framework Architect fills that need! Teaches you how to write an API that will stand the test of Time Written by the designer of the NetBeans API at Sun Based on best practices, scalability, and API design patterns What you’ll learn What an API is and what the theories are behind good API design When and why to build an API API design patterns applicable to all programming languages, especially modern, object–oriented languages How to optimize and test APIs Who is this book for? This book is recommended to every API architect who prefers a bit more engineering design over a purely artistic one. About the Author Jaroslav Tulach is the founder and initial architect of NetBeans, later acquired by Sun. As creator of the technology behind NetBeans, he is still with the project to find ways to improve the design skills among all the programmers who contribute to the success of NetBeans open source project.

How to Think About Algorithms

Publisher: Cambridge University Press Publication: 2008, English ISBN: 9780521849319 Pages: 472 There are many algorithm texts that provide lots of well-polished code and proofs of correctness. This book is not one of them. Instead, this book presents insights, notations, and analogies to help the novice describe and think about algorithms like an expert. By looking at both the big picture and easy step-by-step methods for developing algorithms, the author helps students avoid the common pitfalls. He stresses paradigms such as loop invariants and recursion to unify a huge range of algorithms into a few meta-algorithms. Part of the goal is to teach the students to think abstractly. Without getting bogged with formal proofs, the book fosters a deeper understanding of how and why each algorithm works. These insights are presented in a slow and clear manner accessible to second- or third-year students of computer science, preparing them to find their own innovative ways to solve problems. Rather than provide lots of well-polished code and proofs of correctness, this book presents insights, notations, and analogies to help the novice describe and think about algorithms like an expert. It stresses paradigms such as loop invariants and recursion to unify a huge range of algorithms into a few meta-algorithms. About the Author Jeff Edmonds received his Ph.D. in 1992 at University of Toronto in theoretical computer science. His thesis proved that certain computation problems require a given amount of time and space. He did his postdoctorate work at the ICSI in Berkeley on secure multi-media data transmission and in 1995 became an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at York University, Canada. He has taught their algorithms course thirteen times to date. He has worked extensively at IIT Mumbai, India, and University of California San Diego. He is well published in the top theoretical computer science journals in topics including complexity theory, scheduling, proof systems, probability theory, combinatorics, and, of course, algorithms.

ipv6-second-edition-theory-protocol-and-practice-2nd-edition

Publisher: Morgan Kaufmann Publication: 2003, English ISBN: 9781558608108 Pages: 536 The newly revised edition of this best-seller is a complete guide to the deployment of the newest version of the Internet protocol, IPv6. The second edition of IPv6: Theory, Protocol, and Practice guides readers through implemetation and deployment of IPv6. The Theory section takes a close, unbiased look at why so much time and effort has been expended on revising IPv4. In the Protocol section is a comprehensive review of the specifics of IPv6 and related protocols. Finally, the Practice section provides hands-on explanations of how to roll out IPv6 support and services. This completely rewritten edition offers updated and comprehensive coverage of important topics including router and server configuration, security, the impact of IPv6 on mobile networks, and evaluating the impact of IPv6-enabled networks globally. Pete Loshin's famously lucid explanations benefit readers at every turn, making Ipv6: Theory, Protocol, and Practice the best way for a large diverse audience to get up to speed on this groundbreaking technology. * The comprehensive, accessible, and up-to-date resource needed by network engineers and support staff, product developers and managers, programmers, and marketing professionals * Divided into sections on theory, the protocol's technical details, and techniques for building Ipv6 networks, this book covers not only the protocol but the ways in which the protocol can be integrated into networks. * Covers critical topics in depth, including router and server configuration, security, value assessment, and the impact of Ipv6 on global networks About the Author Pete Loshin writes and consults about Internet protocols and open source network technologies. Formerly on staff at BYTE Magazine, Information Security Magazine and other publications, his work appears regularly in leading trade publications and websites including CPU, Computerworld, PC Magazine, EarthWeb, Internet.com, and CNN. Pete Loshin, Independent Consultant
