The Standard Template Library (STL)
One reason for the success of C++ is that today a large number of libraries is available
on the market which greatly facilitate the development of programs, because they offer
reliable and well-proven components. A particularly carefully constructed library
is the Standard Template Library, which has been developed at Hewlett-Packard by
Alexander Stepanov, Meng Lee, and their colleagues. It has been accepted by the
ANSI/ISO committee as part of the C++ Standard (ISO/IEC (1998)).
The emphasis of the STL is on data structures for containers, and the algorithms
that work with them. The technical reference document of the STL
(Stepanov and Lee (1995)) has practically, with some modifications, become a part
of the C++ Standard (ISO/IEC (1998)). Both are the basis for the first two parts
of this book. The document can be freely used, if the copyright conditions are
quoted. These conditions plus references to sources can be found on page 273 of the
Appendix.

Multi-Paradigm Design for C++
Multi-paradigm design tries to dig deeper than any single technology or technique
to address fundamental questions of software abstraction and design. What is a
paradigm? What is the relationship between analysis, design, and implementation?
These questions go to the foundations of abstraction that underlie the basic
paradigms of design and programming. And the answers to these questions more
often appeal to broad insight and experience than to the Þrst principles that are the
hallmark of most academic research. These are questions not only of technology,
but of system organization of design in the broadest sense of the word.

This manual is a supplement to the LabVIEW User Manual and assumes
that you are familiar with that material. You should also know how to
operate LabVIEW, and your computer and operating system.
This manual provides an overview of each function and VI available in
LabVIEW. However, for more specific information regarding each
function and VI (e.g. for specific parameter information), refer to the
LabVIEW Online Reference, which you can access by selecting
Online Reference from the LabVIEW Help menu, or Help, which you
access by selecting Show Help from the LabVIEW Help menu.
