An Introduction to General Systems Thinking (Silver Anniversary Edition)
Weinberg distills the essence from von Bertalanffy's classic and manages to present it in a very accessible fashion. The book has been out of print for quite a while so it is great to see a new edition. The message and information contained in here, although originally published in 1975, is now more relevant than ever.
Weinberg covers many aspects of systems theory beginning with the main stumbling block with the present scientific paradigm: the idea that the universe is mechanistic. His treatment is much more general than Robert Rosen's in "Life Itself" but still conveys why the mechanistic notion is flawed.
He then outlines the general systems theory approach before leading into the idea that a system is simply a way of looking at the world. He then outlines the principle of indifference. This leads straight into two sections outlining various aspects of making observations. Finally he discusses behaviour and then some general systems questions.
Throughout the book he uses many examples from disparate fields in conjunction with questions for further research. It is great to see someone who doesn't preach systems but actually uses the ideas.
Definitely a must-read as we decided how to solve the myriad of issues before us.

Embedded Software for SoC
This title covers all software-related aspects of SoC design, from embedded and application-domain specific operating systems to system architecture for future SoC. It will give embedded software designers invaluable insights into the constraints imposed by the use of embedded software in an SoC context.
Embedded Processor Design Challenges
This textbook is intended to give an introduction to and an overview of sta- of-the-art techniques in the design of complex embedded systems. The book title is SAMOS for two major reasons. First, it tries to focus on the actual distinct, yet important problem ?elds of System-Level design of embedded systems, including mapping techniques and synthesis,Architectural design,Modeling issues such as speci?cation languages, formal models, and- nallySimulation. The second reason is that the volume includes a number of papers presented at a workshop with the same name on the Island of Samos, Greece, in July 2001. In order to receive international attention, a number of reputed researchers were invited to this workshop to present their current work. Participation was by invitation only. For the volume presented here, a number of additional papers where selected based on a call for papers. All contributions were refereed. This volume presents a selection of 18 of the refereed papers, including 2 invited papers. The textbook is organized according to four topics: The ?rst isA)System- LevelDesignandSimulation.Inthissection, wepresentacollectionofpapers that give an overview of the challenging goal to design and explore alternatives of embedded system implementations at the system-level. One paper gives an overview of models and tools used in system-level design. The other papers present new models to describe applications, provide models for re?nement and design space exploration, and for tradeo? analysis between cost and ?exibility of an implementation.
Hardware-Software Co-Design of Embedded Systems: The POLIS Approach
Embedded systems are informally defined as a collection of programmable parts surrounded by ASICs and other standard components, that interact continuously with an environment through sensors and actuators. The programmable parts include micro-controllers and Digital Signal Processors (DSPs).
Embedded systems are often used in life-critical situations, where reliability and safety are more important criteria than performance. Today, embedded systems are designed with an ad hoc approach that is heavily based on earlier experience with similar products and on manual design. Use of higher-level languages such as C helps structure the design somewhat, but with increasing complexity it is not sufficient. Formal verification and automatic synthesis of implementations are the surest ways to guarantee safety.
Thus, the POLIS system which is a co-design environment for embedded systems is based on a formal model of computation.
POLIS was initiated in 1988 as a research project at the University of California at Berkeley and, over the years, grew into a full design methodology with a software system supporting it.
Hardware-Software Co-Design of Embedded Systems: The POLIS Approach is intended to give a complete overview of the POLIS system including its formal and algorithmic aspects.
Hardware-Software Co-Design of Embedded Systems: The POLIS Approach will be of interest to embedded system designers (automotive electronics, consumer electronics and telecommunications), micro-controller designers, CAD developers and students.
The Codesign of Embedded Systems A Unified Hardware-Software Representation
It is desirable to improve the development of complex systems,

Elementary Statistics - A Step by Step Approach 8th Edition
Elementary Statistics: A Step By Step Approach is for introductory statistics courses with a basic algebra prerequisite. The text follows a nontheoretical approach, explaining concepts intuitively and supporting them with abundant examples. In recent editions, Al Bluman has placed more emphasis on conceptual understanding and understanding results, which is also reflected in the online homework environment, Connect Math Hosted by ALEKS. Additionally step-by step instructions on how to utilize the TI-84 Plus graphing calculator, Excel, and Minitab, have also been updated to reflect the most recent editions of each technology.
Connect Math Hosted by ALEKS and LearnSmart for Bluman, Elementary Statistics, was developed by statistics instructors who served as digital contributors. Their experience in teaching statistics provided a significant advantage while they authored each algorithm and providing stepped out, highly detailed solutions that focus on areas where students commonly make mistakes. The result is an online homework platform that provides superior content and feedback, allowing students to effectively learn the material being taught. Several hundred new questions have been added to Connect Math Hosted by ALEKS for this edition to ensure a broader coverage of topics and alignment with the text content. www.mhhe.com/bluman
Really good book for those students who are taking this class online and teaching yourselves the material. Examples of problems are shown step-by-step, and new information is scaffolded onto the stuff learned from previous chapters. I wish the new chapters would remind you of the old information (because you need it to do the new problems), but I use The Idiot's Guide for that. There are some helpful hints in the book about using Excel, so I didn't need to buy a calculator just for this class. I'm still surprised that this book calls itself "Elementary" because there isn't anything elementary about this subject. Statistical formulas are pretty nasty, and problems can take hours to compete. Great overall, but an additional guide can be helpful if you're not taking this in a traditional classroom environment, or don't have a tutor.
Document and Image Compression (Signal Processing and Communications)
Although it's true that image compression research is a mature field, continued improvements in computing power and image representation tools keep the field spry. Faster processors enable previously intractable compression algorithms and schemes, and certainly the demand for highly portable high-quality images will not abate. Document and Image Compression highlights the current state of the field along with the most probable and promising future research directions for image coding.
Organized into three broad sections, the book examines the currently available techniques, future directions, and techniques for specific classes of images. It begins with an introduction to multiresolution image representation, advanced coding and modeling techniques, and the basics of perceptual image coding. This leads to discussions of the JPEG 2000 and JPEG-LS standards, lossless coding, and fractal image compression. New directions are highlighted that involve image coding and representation paradigms beyond the wavelet-based framework, the use of redundant dictionaries, the distributed source coding paradigm, and novel data-hiding techniques. The book concludes with techniques developed for classes of images where the general-purpose algorithms fail, such as for binary images and shapes, compound documents, remote sensing images, medical images, and VLSI layout image data.
Contributed by international experts, Document and Image Compression gathers the latest and most important developments in image coding into a single, convenient, and authoritative source.
Advanced Biosignal Processing
Through 17 chapters, this book presents the principle of many advanced biosignal processing techniques. After an important chapter introducing the main biosignal properties as well as the most recent acquisition techniques, it highlights five specific parts which build the body of this book. Each part concerns one of the most intensively used biosignals in the clinical routine, namely the Electrocardiogram (ECG), the Elektroenzephalogram (EEG), the Electromyogram (EMG) and the Evoked Potential (EP). In addition, each part gathers a certain number of chapters related to analysis, detection, classification, source separation and feature extraction. These aspects are explored by means of various advanced signal processing approaches, namely wavelets, Empirical Modal Decomposition, Neural networks, Markov models, Metaheuristics as well as hybrid approaches including wavelet networks, and neuro-fuzzy networks.
The last part, concerns the Multimodal Biosignal processing, in which we present two different chapters related to the biomedical compression and the data fusion.
Instead organising the chapters by approaches, the present book has been voluntarily structured according to signal categories (ECG, EEG, EMG, EP). This helps the reader, interested in a specific field, to assimilate easily the techniques dedicated to a given class of biosignals. Furthermore, most of signals used for illustration purpose in this book can be downloaded from the Medical Database for the Evaluation of Image and Signal Processing Algorithm. These materials assist considerably the user in evaluating the performances of their developed algorithms.
This book is suited for final year graduate students, engineers and researchers in biomedical engineering and practicing engineers in biomedical science and medical physics.

Mobile_Image_Communication_using_JPEG2000
This thesis is concerned with image communication considering all stages from the beginning to the very end. In order to appropriately handle large raster imagery, the fundamental goal is to reduce the influence of the most limiting factors in mobile environments. In a clear departure from the traditional strategies, this goal is reached by rigorously combining and extending existing approaches to a single communication system aligned to support a certain pre-defined task. To achieve this, the modern imaging standard JPEG2000 serves as a foundation for image compression and streaming. Founded on the concept of Regions of Interest and Levels of Detail to describe current demands at client side, powerful generic strategies for content streaming are proposed. Special attention is also given to the application areas - image browsing, viewer guidance and content exchange. Beside new ideas to accomplish these tasks on application level, detailed statements on the design of the respective communication strategy are provided. The achieved results show that many resources can be saved by an appropriate mobile image communication using JPEG2000.

All New Electronics Self Teaching Guide (Self-Teaching Guides) by Harry Kybett
he basic design and direction of this book is absolutely excellent. The question and answer format engages the reader for better understanding, and the topics covered include a wide variety of essential areas. The book falls down, however, because of being 'rushed out without adequate editing' (nor usable index), thus leaving the reader confused at times. Other problems include incorrect answers to problems, and inadequate explanations. So while I know that I learned a lot from the book, I also know that if I recommended it to friends they would be calling me saying how frustrated they were with the mistakes. For that very reason my review is not a recommendation. I have strong hopes that the next edition will fix the problems here and I will THEN be able to recommend this book.
In case you are wondering (and I know I was), the third edition is actually written by Earl Boysen now since Harry Kybett, having written the first two editions, has passed away.
The Q & A format is one of those things that always seems to be a bit unique in any particular book, and this one is no exception. In the early chapters many of the questions may seem insulting in that they are so easy, and the reader can find themself wondering if the book was written for 8 year old kids! But the real beauty of that approach is that it forces your mind to change modes on a regular basis: instead of staying in a passive info-absorbing mode, it has to stop and become active at solving a problem, which results in better retention. So even if the question seems childish, the information is more firmly impressed on you. In the middle and latter chapters, the Q & A format usually sticks with problem solving, often asking you to repeat the same sort of calculations you have seen in examples. Most of the time the solutions include more than just answers, serving to explain just how the answer was arrived at. But the problems occur with that word "most"! It is also the case that many of the times when we

Electronics: A Systems Approach (3rd Edition)
"Electronics: A Systems Approach" purports to teach electronics from a top-down vs. the standard bottom-up approach (i.e. starting from low-level semiconductor physics and working up to applications).
While it does start that way, Storey's book quickly becomes another conventional electronics textbook after ch 2 or so. (It also has a separate conventional section on digital electronics so it does not have an integrated approach in that regard despite statements to the contrary).
This is a decent book but I'm disappointed that it did not live up to its own hype. I truly think that such a top-down book is needed, i.e. a book that starts from the high-level before working down to the specification level (datasheet level); before working down to the component and only then the transistor and semiconductor level. Instead most textbooks, including this one, drown you in detail that you'll only need if you're a mixed-signal IC chip designer. (Why spend so much time discussing transistor amplifiers when most engineers use op-amps?) What's really needed is a book that's useful for the typical engineer, who's mainly now a consumer of IC chips at the board-level and occasionally discrete-component level.
Electronics textbooks are too general to be useful- a far better text for example would cover the system design (hardware, software and manufacturing) of something like a cellphone- explain cellular standards, and specifications first before working down to the component-level, etc.
Elementary Linear Algebra 6th Edition

Discrete Volterra Series and Nonlinear Echo Cancellation
The discrete Volterra series holds particular value in the analysis of nonlinear systems in telecommunications. However, most books on the Volterra series either do not address this application or only offer a partial discussion. Nonlinear Aspects of Telecommunications provides an in-depth treatment of the Volterra series and the benefits it offers as a representation of nonlinear problems, particularly in echo cancellation in digital telecommunications systems.
Beginning with the fundamentals of the discrete Volterra series, the author presents its basic definition, notions, conditions for convergence and stability, and its matrix representation for multiple-input and multiple-output nonlinear digital systems. He pays significant attention to the important problem of approximating a nonlinear digital system using the discrete Volterra series and offers new results in this area--results not yet available in other texts.
The second part of the book uses the background of Part I to show the Volterra series' application to echo cancellation. It provides introductory material regarding the basics of adaptive cancellers, and analyzes structures for nonlinear echo cancellers using nonlinear transversal filters for baseband transmission. The last section covers nonlinear echo cancellers for voiceband transmission and interleaved structures.
Full of illustrations, examples, and new results, Nonlinear Aspects of Telecommunications is your first and best resource for understanding and applying the discrete Volterra series to nonlinear echo cancellation problems
Being in the nonlinear signal processing field, I was thinking of buying this book for myself, which appeared appealing, given the somewhat general title. However, I got our library to order it. It has only two chapters, the first an 166 page introduction to the discrete Volterra series. This very long chapter may be useful as an introduction, but there are also other books and papers that may serve the same purpos
